Precocious at the Small Press Expo!

For second, and final, time this year, I'm leaving my isolation chamber to table at a convention! The Small Press Expo is a great show for comics lovers, because it has EVERYTHING one could want. I'll be there with my fellow SpiderForesters, at tables E12-13a. DC area, people, it's definitely worth the trip - and TICKETS TO IT ARE CHEAP!

You'll have to watch my twitter feed for last-minute details. As the Spiderlings behind the table will shift, the only time I'm only guaranteed to be there (well, give me some bathroom break wiggle room) is Saturday afternoon, from 3-7pm! I'll be wandering around the con the rest of Saturday. I *probably* won't be around Sunday. (Sorry in advance to those only available then - my books will still be there, and I'll try to sketch in them ahead of time, so you have a special bonus even if I'm not there.)

I'll have the three Precocious books with me, and might do some small commissions. Any other goodies, like charms, will probably be there. Along with my stuff, the table will feature lots of awesome SpiderForest comics to buy!

And here's a general reminder that I'm still REALLY broken and sick (I have a special med I can only take once a week that lets me be "normal" for these shows) and that means all sorts of stuff is on hold until I can improve. I'm months behind on emails (and might never manage to reply to some, because writing anything longer than a tweet, like this post, takes a LOT out of me), and any work beyond comic updates is currently beyond my ability. I know the site is broken or outdated in various places, and my store remains disabled until I feel like I'm able to do regular post office visits again. All I can do is ask you to wait and keep the faith. I haven't forgotten or deliberately ignored anyone - I'm just stuck in survival/treatment mode until I can get moving again. You all are my motivation to keep fighting!

Chrispy at Conventions!

In my broken state, I only allow myself to do two social things a year, so here they are! Coming up WAY TOO SOON, is Anthrocon. I will be there! You should be there. Specifically, at table C3, buying my three books in-person, so you can get a nifty sketch in them! And you can talk with Mat, creator of Badly Drawn Kitties, master table assistant, and model for our doomed Precocious guest.

Since I *am* fragile, my ability to draw commissions may be limited. Drawing all weekend is one of my favorite things about cons, so I'll go until my body says NO MAS, but I'm going to raise rates* so I don't destroy myself in the process. (I will have some $5 sketch cards too, for you cheap-os.) I'm happy to talk with everyone - keeping me talking is BETTER for my health, so please make me feel special! During the con, make sure you keep track of my Twitter feed, as I'll try to post updates on my hours and commission queue there.

FYI: I've disabled my already-glitchy store for the con. (I've been too lazy to alert tech guy about that. It's just a quirk brought on by the server move.) Once I'm home, the code is tweaked and I have a tally of my remaining stock, the store will reopen.

(*Listen, every artist should raise rates - and attendees should remember *they* likely make FAR MORE per year than most artists, so please do the right thing and compensate for the depressed market rates by tipping!)

Anthrocon This Weekend!

Oh yeah, I should probably put up a news post about it, huh? I will be Anthrocon this weekend, in Pittsburgh, and I'm looking forward to saying hi to a whole bunch of you! You'll find me at table L01, in the back. Look for the Precocious banner and the Precocious/Copper road sign/beach towel on the front of the table. Mat from Badly Drawn Kitties (comic not for kiddies) is back as my super assistant, and this year I've brought in the big guns for backup should I die of excitement, with Mandy of Curtailed joining us too!  It'll be a blast, as I'm also between other awesome friends, the heroic Bill Holbrook and the charming Marjorie Rishel. (That's right, for one weekend the world gets to revolve around me!)

While me being constantly near death since last August means no Precocious book 4 debut, I'll have the other three books - and you can get them sketched in and signed!  I'll be offering badge commissions and will be doing Copic marker half-page commissions too! I did a test run of those at Fur The More, and they were fun! (No, they won't be as cheap this time. That was for the trial.) Small sketch cards are also available from all three of us at the table!  Just a reminder: I *only* take commissions at cons now, and due to SPX focusing on publishing, this is probably your last chance to get some Chrispy art drawn for you this year!

There will be a selection of new and old buttons from all three comics, and various other Precocious goodies, like the poster and window clings, will be for sale. Oh, and WE WORK FOR TIPS!  My base prices are set relatively low for my level of experience, but if you want to show some love you will be rewarded with some party popper fun, or a special treat!

Convention Time/Timing (UPDATED! I DID IT!)

6/1 Update: SUCCESS! 

Despite missing nearly a full day of the con, everyone there was incredibly nice and no one screamed at me openly for being the Marketplace's "That Guy." This ended up being my highest-earning DC-area con yet, and I credit the positivity and proactive nature of the Fur The More staff for creating a strong and supportive environment. People were nice even though I stayed at my table to catch up and didn't socialize as much as I should have.

Also throwing huge praises to Mandy and Fox for letting me abuse their time for a late lunch. It was surreal and exhilarating to live inside their comic, Curtailed, for a couple hours. (Those two are so perfect they create comic-worthy moments every few seconds - and I TOTALLY STOLE SOME OF THEM FOR THIS SUMMER'S UPCOMING STORYLINE.)

I also got to draw for middle schoolers today, which is always a huge boost. The next generation is dangerously smart and talented and inspiring - and I was faced with the idea of destroying them out of fear, or encouraging them in hopes they won't turn me into Soylent Green when they get into power. Here's hoping those quick portraits and fox drawings keep me alive one day!

Four days of heavy talking and no sleep are having predictable results on my condition currently, as my facial muscles are super "hungover," but I got extreme enjoyment out of that time! (I get my treatment Thursday. It it helps, maybe I'll be slightly less drama for everyone next time around.) No Copper Road update is happening until I get back under control - so maybe next Monday? I have no Precocious buffer left, so that's my current comic priority.

I need to turn some items back on in the Precocious store, but my password expired and I can't remember which of the dozen or so options I was using. Maybe I'll find the post-it note with it around here later...

I'm at the Small Press Expo!

As the time is upon us, this is moved from the post below to up here! DC-area friends, you can find me at the SpiderForest Webcomic Collective table at the Small Press Expo in DC! (Well, Bethesda.) Find me with the cool kids at tables E10 and E11!

Since it's a crowded table - lots of awesome SpiderForest books for you to buy! - I'm just bringing my books and the strip #1000 cast post cards for sketching. SPX peeps will get a small bonus sketch in every Precocious book they buy, though! Buy multiple Precocious books, get goodies! Buy my book(s) *and* a book from another SpiderForester, get more goodies!

With a bunch of us behind the two tables, and my health *still* being problematic, I might rotate out from the table for stretches this weekend. (I prefer hanging out at the table, though, so I'm fighting!) Keep watch over my Twitter feed for updates!

(By the way, while my internet situation may be dicey during this trip, a new bonus comic is scheduled to go up this weekend!)

Copper Road + Lots of News!

The new comic is another one taken right from my life. Read it, then imagine me answering the door and finding the woman brought her young daughter with her.

I hope you've been reading along with Curtailed! Every week, Mandy and Fox have surprised me with a new epic Precocious crossover! I cannot thank her enough for this incredibly experience. So, I hit my 2000th comic a couple days back, and that's kinda a HUGE DEAL - but I had to spend the day in bed after re-aggravating the injury that took my August away. (You know, it turns out you need your hip to do JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING IN LIFE. This has really sucked!) So here I am celebrating it now! Wanna rock strip 2000? How about celebrating it with strip.... 1000?  I reworked that fancy comic with the post-1000 characters for an 11x17" poster! Don't like that? Look around the store for art cards, charms and the Precocious books!  (Yes, I know there's already a banner on the front page for this, but I have a LOT of doctor bills piling up, since I'm super broken at the moment.)

Copper Road! Anthrocon! Kickstarter!

New Copper Road, but more on that in a bit...

It's time, everyone! I will be at Anthrocon this weekend, with the debut of the super-pretty book three! The birthday cake gift boxes will be back for all who get a badge or art card commission, and I will have a few Cupcakes of Bliss! Another debut will be Precocious cast poster!  Lots of other good stuff will be there - including my assistant, Mat of Badly Drawn Kitties - so come to table L18 and buy many things!

Ok, *now* we can Copper Road it up! I could have easily made this a comic raging against June only having 30 days  - I may know the calendar, but I could REALLY use that 31st day with con prep! - but instead you get another rant about something more important: HOW COULD KEEBLER DO SOMETHING THIS TERRIBLE!?!?! Little Debbie can pull it off! We need an emergency Bud visit to make life worth it again. Vote here to see the new comic!

Finally, for you Kickstarter backers, I sent out my pre-survey primer! Surveys will start going out tonight and tomorrow, and they'll likely finish arriving once I'm back from the con. (As always, show mercy to the artist coming back from a busy weekend. I will be fully zonked for most of next week. THEN the fun begins!)

Fur The 'More and Furry Weekend Atlanta

I will be on the road for the next two weeks, so let's make this post a twofer: Find me at Fur The 'More this weekend, and Furry Weekend Atlanta (tabling with Becca Hillburn of Nattosoup) next weekend! I have no FTM map, but it's a smaller room. If you can't find me, that's on you! The FWA map is below. I hope lots of you stop by! I will be selling books, art cards, buttons/charms and badge commissions. Becca will be selling watercolor commissions, along with her adorable charms, minicomics and whatever else she wants to bring!

Expect my communication to be somewhat slow while I'm traveling, as I might not have time, much less a computer. I will still probably be Twittering like a madman via phone, though!

A reminder: Due to three cons in six weeks, plus the book 3 preorder likely starting in between, the Precocious store will be closed during that period. Can't mail things while I'm on the road, and my book stock is running out, so I'll have to wait for a preorder-fueled re-order. You can still email me about books and art if you can't wait, but the earliest I can ship anything is the last week of March.

New Copper Road + News stuff!

Hey, I made one! Hooray! Vote here to see the latest Copper Road.

No, I didn't intentionally take Copper Roads away to force you to earn them back in the book three preorder. It's an unfortunate consequence of book work, convention prepping and me being very ill. (I'm still doing the doctor circuit, hoping for some good news.)

On the book, the preoder has been delayed again, though the release date hasn't. Basically, I'm not taking your money until the book is already complete and ready to go. There will be no iffyness on this thing. I have a basic plan for the tiers I will be offering, though I might sneak in a quickie reader survey in the next week or so to gauge interest before investing in bonus goodies.  The big delay right now is not about the book being completed, but when I can put up the campaign page. If things go as planned, I'll be on the road for a large chunk of March, visiting friends and tabling at Fur The More and Furry Weekend Atlanta, so I just won't have computer time to sit down and type stuff out. It may take until early April before the campaign is proofed and approved for launch.

Also of note: Due to my two-cons-in-two-weeks journey, I will be shutting down the Precocious store during that time. I can't ship books on the road, and I'll have all remaining art cards with me at the cons for sale. This means if you want to grab some art or the books, do it now. My stock is running low, so I may keep the store closed until after Awesome Con DC.

(There's nothing on the comic originals page as I wrote this post, since we may implement another system for purchasing those, but you can contact me if you want to purchase a strip.)

Fur The 'More - March 14-16 - Baltimore, MD
This is a second-year con that was a blast to show at last year! If you are in the area, I highly encourage you to come check it out. I've been looking for a solid local-ish furry con I can make my home, and this one has an amazing staff and a wonderful vibe to it. (And it's 20 minutes from one of my best friends' apartment, so I get a cherished visit in as long as I keep attending!)

Furry Weekend Atlanta - March 20-23 - Atlanta, GA
The birthday con! I'm introducing Becca of Nattosoup to the furry con scene, and we both have birthdays that week. (She's the 19th and I'm the 24th, so we *just* miss out on exact days.) This means you must be EXTRA NICE to us! This is also my return to the first con I ever tabled at. I don't live in Georgia anymore, so FWA is usually too out of my way to attend, but this year we're making it an event!  Treat us well, however, and you might lock me in for the future!

Awesome Con DC - April 18-20 - Washington, DC
Look, another "home" con for me! This is my first year showing at Awesome Con. People who attended it last year had nothing but good stuff to say, so I'm really excited about it! If my hometown peeps don't show up to cheer me on, I'll be so distressed! (It also looks like a fairly powerful con for fandoms - what a guest list! - so there's lots to amuse you when you aren't fawning over me.)

Anthrocon - July 3-6 - Pittsburgh, PA
This is the big special furry con, and also marks the estimated debut of Precocious' third book! This is always a super-fun even for me. I cherish my time with my cartoonist buddies - our hotel room alone will have the combined powers of me, Mat of Badly Drawn Kitties and the Bittersweet Candy Bowl team - and I love checking in with all my con regulars. Even if I keep getting sick and die before this, my stuffed corpse will attend and be propped up at the table. IT WILL BE MY FINAL WISH!

Mechacon - August 1-3 - New Orleans, LA
After I drag Becca to a furry con, she's taking me to her hometown con, along with lots of my SCAD buddies. I'm really looking forward to this one. I've heard nothing but glowing things about the con itself, and it is only enhanced by it being New Orleans once I walk out the doors!

I ended up missing out with lottery for Small Press Expo (SPX), AND the SpiderForest crew I'd be with for SPX needs to murder 28 people for any of us to get it, so I expect to miss it this year. (Hey, I won every other con lottery I've tried, so I can't really cry about bad luck.)  FurFright, the Halloween con in Connecticut, has closed its doors - but there's a chance something new may rise from its ashes. It was such a positive con, I'll check out the new version too. (Wishing the best to the FurFright founders, by the way! Thank you for everything!)  I adore Midwest FurFest, in Chicago, too, but it's very hard to justify the travel costs unless I have lots of buddies there to make it worthwhile. I wish I was more popular, guys! It would make these trips so much easier! One of these days I'll be powerful enough to justify a west coast con! I don't expect to be at any shows mentioned in this paragraph, but they remain on my radar for future years.

I don't have an interest in returning to ConnectiCon or InterventionCon this year. As much as I enjoyed the attendees I met, both those cons have awful staff and I don't wish to deal with them again. I don't appreciate people refusing to reply to me and never paying back money I'm owed (ConnectiCon, which did this to SEVERAL of its guests) and a shyster outright lying to people to get their money when they fully know it's a ripoff (InterventionCon).  I made profits at both last year, but the people behind the cons DO NOT deserve support. I don't like being negative, but artists have to pay and put in lots of work/travel hours to make these trips. Ripoffs are devastating, especially to those with less-known names, and thus a smaller margin of error.

Back to the happy, I really hope to see a lot of you around the shows!

Deleted Scene + FurFright + Contest Funtime!

Lots of stuff for this update! As I am heading north to table at FurFright this weekend, there's no time for me to spread things out! Connecticut peeps: Come see me!  I'll be in the back corner, waiting for you - and crying if you don't come.

This should have gone up for Friday, but I won't be near my computer on Friday. Vote to see a deleted scene now!  Due to the nature of the costume contest, I did a lot of playing around with my scripting. The original comics for the weekend ended up being scrapped. Those comics featured the kids arguing and rules and timing, which is so very them - but came out too wordy.  So, of course, I compressed THOSE comics into one script, just so I could make this strip to show you (some of) what might have been.

Speaking of the contest. The soft deadline has passed, and I've locked in most of the script.  Odds are new suggestions won't make it into the comic, but I still encourage art, so I can show it off later on!  Thanks to all who have submitted! I ended up using more costume ideas than I thought I would, so look forward to all the reveals! The first reader-inspired costume pops up on Sunday.  (Contest winners won't be revealed until the end of the story, by the way.)

Small Press Expo this weekend!

SPX time is finally here! For those not in the now, this is an event where hundreds of the best indie/web cartoonists out there get together to sell and make beautiful things for your amusement.  With hundreds of creators collected under one roof, and admission only being $10, there is no excuse to not hop on a bus and get yourself to the DC area! (It's right next to a Metro station, so if you have friends and relative in DC, give them a surprise visit!)

I will be at table A8, with the lovely Heidi Black.  The other side of our Corner of Power, table A7, will contain the amazing Becca Hillburn and the mighty Emily Kluwin.

I suggest everyone make me look good in front of my peers by buying lots of things. I will have both Precocious books - possible with bonus front page doodles - charms and buttons (including the NEW designs), and my art card binder.  If you've been eyeing one of the art cards in the store, grab it now. It may not come back with me after SPX! I should have stuff for other commissions, such as character badges, too, so ask if you're interested!

And never be afraid to bother me when I'm at my table. If I'm working on art, my head might be down. You are encouraged to come up and look at what I'm drawing and chat with me! I do these shows so I can see you folks!

Tuesday stream + Kickstarter Update!

As the preorders for book 2 keep shipping out, Tuesday marks the first of the Rent-A-Chrispy streaming sessions! Come follow along on Ustream at 8pm Eastern time for some chatting and arting! Scroll down to the other streaming news post for my typical streaming rundown.

For the rest of you backers, work on artist edition sketches is moving along nicely! Above you can see a few samples. Click on the image to see more I posted to my Tumblr.

I'm almost done with all of the tiers marked for August delivery, and I've already started on other tiers. (Sometimes I had a color set out, so I looked for artist editions requesting it.) Everything drawn should be on its way to those backers by next week. The only delay this week is that I need time to prep for my InterventionCon visit! (Come see me, DC-area people!)  Bonus: I'm getting the dolls for Cupcakes of Bliss at the con! That means the dollmakers will be there, marking maybe the only time a latecomer could grab an extra doll order. The new button set should arrive next week as well, which is when Cupcake packing begins!

Once I have cleared through the pre-orders, the remaining Precocious books will be going up in the store. Soon! Sooooon! The store will be populated with more and more things as I get time. Feel free to nudge me over it if there's something you're after. Money talks!

On to ConnectiCon this weekend!

Get ready, ConnectiCon. I AM COMING!

Anthrocon, you were wonderful! I sold some stuff and had an amazing time with friends, fans and strangers who should become friends and fans! I took a day to relax, BUT NOW IT'S BACK TO BUSINESS!

Those in New England this weekend need to sneak over to Hartford this weekend and find me in the Online Media Guest room! I will be selling books (including some with bonus sketches, as seen above, while supplies last), selling my art cards, taking art card commissions for those who want to see their favorite Pokemon immortalized, selling charms/pins/sketch cards and talking Animal Crossing to all who want (and don't want to) hear about it.  Kicks and Isabelle will be with me again, endorsing the adorable art cards of them!

I don't know if the con updated the map yet, but find me in the Online Media Guest room by looking for that green tablecloth above and my pink Precocious banner! Stop by and grab some goodies! Kids get free magnets. Adults can get cursed Tiffany-style smiley pins.

Note: If you would like me to have an original Precocious strip on hand for you, please let me know. I may not bring the originals binder to ConnectiCon, as I discovered I lacked table space for it at AC. Precocious originals are $75 and Copper Road originals range up to $120 depending on size and complexity. I will provide protective sleeves and backing boards for them. Otherwise, everyone has to wait until the store system gets set up and pay the extra shipping and handling costs.

This is the big week! Are you ready? This is what I've been working towards for all these months. BOOK TWO IS HERE! That's just the start, though, as I have much more to offer. I *will* be offering table commissions - badges, art cards and a few half-pages - which makes this one of the few times this year you can get custom art from me.  I'll be bringing along a pile of original art for sale as well, and even bringing original Precocious and Copper Road comics for sale.  (If you're interested in grabbing an original, write me and let me know so I can bring it with me.)

I'm spending almost all of my time at table N19 in the dealer's den, trying to pay off some of those medical bills that keep piling up over here.  Find me by walking into the hall, taking a right and heading to the corner of great comics! (I'm next to Bill Holbrook this year. So excited to be close to one of my cartooning heroes!)   Above is the badge I'll be wearing, to help you pick me out of the line-ups.  Assisting me at my table is the wonderful and magnetic Mat of Badly Drawn Kitties. You can tell us apart because he is blond, with short hair, is haunted by less obvious demons, and is adorable in a way that only Canadians can be. (That means he's probably wearing a Canucks jersey.)

I'm looking forward to seeing familiar faces (please don't get mad if I have forgotten your face - it's not only that I meet so many folks, but I also know most of you by your username or character badge instead of face) and meeting lots of new people! Come keep me busy and happy!

Notes: I'm happy to chat with everyone, but remember this is still a business trip for me. If you're just chatting, move to the side to let others have access to the table, and don't feel bad if I have to pause and turn my attention to customers. My prices have increased across the board, which means they've gone from laughably cheap to more reasonable. Increases in small business costs, plus all those medical bills, means I can't be as giving as before. If you pre-ordered book 2, I will not have your copy at Anthrocon. The Kickstarter order of books has not arrived yet. I don't know what my social schedule will be like, but you can invite me to things. If I get an escort (because I'm shy and still don't know many people on the circuit), I'll try to hang in the zoo after hours to do my homework.

Conventions are coming...

In 10 days I'll be on my way to Anthrocon. One week after that, it's ConnectiCon! Wow. I still have so much left to do!

For those who have followed along with my social media and art accounts you can find by checking out the sidebar, you've seen the above cards come into being recently.  I am almost done with my artist trading card portfolio! This year I broke down and added fan art stuff, so feast your eyes on Pokemon and Animal Crossing cards! (No ponies, because it seems like every other artist out there has that covered.)  Now I have to add five Precocious cards and I'll be done.  Those still available after Connecticon will pop up for sale when the Precocious store debuts.

Two more portfolios still need to be put together: One with samples and original artwork, and a special ego-boosting collection of original strips! (So, if you'll be attending any of those cons and you want to own an original Precocious or Copper Road, let me know so I can bring it with me.)

I'm not sure what my table commission situation will be like at Anthrocon yet. I'll be taking some, but maybe not a full load due to ongoing health issues slowing my process way down. It's best to get to me early if you want a badge!

You'll get the in-depth Anthrocon news post at the beginning of next week! For now, I have to figure out how to draw two weeks of Precocious (plus those ATCs) from my bed...

Widdle animals!

After being ill all of May, I'm going to try and use June to tune myself up for the convention run that starts in July. Thus, an excuse to draw cute things! I'm still not taking on commissions, though. I consider these warm-ups, with little pressure attached to them. If I spend an afternoon drawing one, and no one wants it, only I'm disappointed. Despite my June vow, nothing has changed medically yet. All I've done is remove one drug that was hurting more than helping, but no real replacement is happening, so I'm back to the usual death-face issues. (And that means this daily art thing isn't likely to last, but I'll try to keep things moving.)
