Convention Time/Timing (UPDATED! I DID IT!)
6/1 Update: SUCCESS!
Despite missing nearly a full day of the con, everyone there was incredibly nice and no one screamed at me openly for being the Marketplace's "That Guy." This ended up being my highest-earning DC-area con yet, and I credit the positivity and proactive nature of the Fur The More staff for creating a strong and supportive environment. People were nice even though I stayed at my table to catch up and didn't socialize as much as I should have.
Also throwing huge praises to Mandy and Fox for letting me abuse their time for a late lunch. It was surreal and exhilarating to live inside their comic, Curtailed, for a couple hours. (Those two are so perfect they create comic-worthy moments every few seconds - and I TOTALLY STOLE SOME OF THEM FOR THIS SUMMER'S UPCOMING STORYLINE.)
I also got to draw for middle schoolers today, which is always a huge boost. The next generation is dangerously smart and talented and inspiring - and I was faced with the idea of destroying them out of fear, or encouraging them in hopes they won't turn me into Soylent Green when they get into power. Here's hoping those quick portraits and fox drawings keep me alive one day!
Four days of heavy talking and no sleep are having predictable results on my condition currently, as my facial muscles are super "hungover," but I got extreme enjoyment out of that time! (I get my treatment Thursday. It it helps, maybe I'll be slightly less drama for everyone next time around.) No Copper Road update is happening until I get back under control - so maybe next Monday? I have no Precocious buffer left, so that's my current comic priority.
I need to turn some items back on in the Precocious store, but my password expired and I can't remember which of the dozen or so options I was using. Maybe I'll find the post-it note with it around here later...

Day-Late Birthday Bonus?
I've been in an unfun flare-up state since Friday, so I was kinda too sick to revel in my own birthday yesterday. So, uh, it happened. Please mark your calendars for proper and timely gift giving next year, and gift hard enough to erase all memories of this year's birthday failures. (Is this current birthday story proving more allegorical than intended?)
Anyway, the day was marked by a gift to the backers of the book 3 Kickstarter. (Many of whom probably ignored the email and missed that it contained good stuff. This post is your reminder!) As I close out final the loose ends of the campaign, I released a PDF featuring Awards to Inspire and its bonus side-story, "Gus." Enjoy this extra boost of continuity! (I expect the book 4 preorder to launch sometime in May, so if you don't want to miss out on these extras anymore, start saving now!)

The Kickstarter and the Current story!
(Image unrelated to post. I thought I should include a picture,
and I had an unused panel from the Food Fight story, so...)
My preference is to mix up the types of stories in Precocious for variety, so it's a little odd for four of the last five stories to be school-based. In the case of the current "morale-boosting" tale, it's a quirk of timing on two levels. We're a few weeks away from spring, when things (in theory) warm up enough for more outdoors-based storytelling - as well as marking the return of the kids' standard outfits! In sorting through upcoming stories, I found myself with a two-week opening before the warmer weather tales began, and my weather-independent stories were either too short or too long to fit.
But another bit of timing came into play. A little over six months after a stupid fall managed to mess me up, and trigger a wave of painful complications and bad flare-ups of prior medical issues, I've finally fought my way through to the last bit of the book 3's Kickstarter fulfillment. After the packages I'm mailing tomorrow arrive, all that's left is one person (who has most of his order, and is waiting on a special reward), and the few who never filled out their backer surveys. (Since you didn't check the Kickstarter emails, maybe you'll see this post?) It's been a very frustrating time for all of us, and I'm so sorry this had to happen. I'd fought so hard to overcome the pain caused by two botched procedures on me to find stability and productivity again, only to be undone because of what I eventually learned was a defective bolt in my desk chair. ("All for the want of a horseshoe nail...")
One of the unlocked Kickstarter rewards was a bonus story for backers, and that one kept getting pushed back with everything else. Maybe there's a silver lining to that dark cloud, because I gained more time to play with the outline - and one day a second story emerged! The original story for Kickstarter backers was told over 14 comics, I had a 14-day gap in my schedule AND a new side-story, and during this 14-day gap was when the last of my overdue Kickstarter rewards would be sent out. SO I HAVE AN IDEA. Now, everyone can enjoy the bit of silliness I had planned for backers, and those who supported the book 3 preorder will be sent a PDF including this story, the bonus side story and some extra commentary upon completion of this story's run here. The side story will answer a question or two, and provide an alternate perspective on the great sixth grader incident.
I can take pride in knowing I didn't (and won't) miss a comic update, no matter how bad things got for me. The goal of a good daily comic is to always be there to make you smile, through happy days, grumpy days and dark moments. Precocious is something that you could take for granted, knowing I will always be there with a new treat for you ever day. (Thought I'd much prefer appreciation as opposed to a sense of entitlement - but such is the double-edge sword of reliability!) It hit me very hard that I couldn't be Captain Reliable for everything, and I had no choice to but to watch my deadlines come and go for non-Precocious work. While I've had a few commissions take too long, though all had legitimate reasons for those delays, this was a new experience for me. And it was awful. ESPECIALLY since I had the Kickstarter reward timing so perfectly planned out! Nothing makes the universe angrier than someone making plans, I guess.
I'm in no way out of the woods yet on any level. My health is still more bad than good, and it'll be interesting to see how that issue plays out with a potentially helpful procedure on the horizon. I also have lots of comic plans that I'm not willing to put on hold. I still plan to debut book four at Anthrocon this year, and the companion book will be produced as well, though for a later release. One cruel twist on life is that your bill don't stop even when you can't work - in fact, they skyrocket with the addition of so many medical bills! (Don't get sick in America unless you're rich.) I will be looking into various fundraising options to help keep both me and the comic going, and I hope enough people appreciate what I do to give me the chance to keep fighting - but first, before any of that, I have a dwindling pile of outstanding orders to finish. Wish me luck!

New Copper Road! 8/1/14
New month, new incentive! Depending on how I order the scripts for the summer camp story, I could have a deleted scene rotating in as an incentive early next week. That means this Copper Road may end up burning bright, and burning fast - soon to be pushed away until it shows up in the archive at the start of next month. (By the way, if I forget to upload the Copper Road archive with the new month again, let me know! June and July's comics are now in there, starting here.)
Today's entry is a little slice of Copper Road comfort, with our friends acting as you'd expect them to act. Vote here to see it now, in all it's simple, silly glory, while you have the chance!
By the way, this is a reminder that deleted scene comics used as incentives during the month don't go into the online archive. (Even I wanted to do it, the archive system I use doesn't let me shuffle comics like that.) They will pop up later as book bonuses, though!
And, if you're still reading, August is a big month for Kickstarter fulfillment, as artist editions are heading out! (All July orders should either be with you already, or on their way. International shipments take a few weeks, so don't panic yet!) If you're one of the few who haven't sent in your surveys yet, please do so! Of course, if you're not the type to check your Kickstarter emails, you're probably not the type to read this deep into a news post. I REMAIN OPTIMISTIC!

Back in town! Time for booooks!
I had yet another wonderful weekend at Anthrocon! Super power thanks to my lovely roomies for this trip: Mat Sherer and the Bittersweet Candy Bowl Team! Having you as my captive audience was as fun for me as it must have been hell for you. *Insert evil Tiffany smile here* I cherish this con, as it's my one chance a year to talk with so many people I adore. I'm pretty sure I spend far too much time as a grinning zombie - unable to contribute to any conversation going on, but loving that I was there to witness it!
Thanks also to all the brave ones who came by my table and got to hear my dumb stories. The kindness, acceptance and generosity of convention-goers allows me to keep going to these shows. Thanks to luck of the draw and scheduling issues, Anthrocon ended up being my last con of 2014. (I'll swap out the con graphic on the main page soon.) For next year, I only have three conventions planned so far - so who wants to give me a reason to apply to more shows?
While I'm exhausted and playing a big game of post-con catch-up - I currently have no Precocious buffer - it's time to begin Kickstarter fulfillment! Surveys are going out THIS week, thanks to delays caused by travel and poorly-timed internet outages. Fulfillment for basic orders should begin as early as next week. (A few already have their goodies!) Kickstarter backers take priority, so I'm not offering the books for general sale until I'm deeper into fulfillment.
Or I might just sleep for seven days straight. In that case, just mentally change the post date for this post accordingly and try to forget all those days with no Precocious update.

Copper Road! Anthrocon! Kickstarter!
New Copper Road, but more on that in a bit...
It's time, everyone! I will be at Anthrocon this weekend, with the debut of the super-pretty book three! The birthday cake gift boxes will be back for all who get a badge or art card commission, and I will have a few Cupcakes of Bliss! Another debut will be Precocious cast poster! Lots of other good stuff will be there - including my assistant, Mat of Badly Drawn Kitties - so come to table L18 and buy many things!
Ok, *now* we can Copper Road it up! I could have easily made this a comic raging against June only having 30 days - I may know the calendar, but I could REALLY use that 31st day with con prep! - but instead you get another rant about something more important: HOW COULD KEEBLER DO SOMETHING THIS TERRIBLE!?!?! Little Debbie can pull it off! We need an emergency Bud visit to make life worth it again. Vote here to see the new comic!
Finally, for you Kickstarter backers, I sent out my pre-survey primer! Surveys will start going out tonight and tomorrow, and they'll likely finish arriving once I'm back from the con. (As always, show mercy to the artist coming back from a busy weekend. I will be fully zonked for most of next week. THEN the fun begins!)

Funded! Thank you!
How's that for neatness? EXACTLY 200% funding! (And only... 700 backers shy of Bud's street address.)
I cannot thank all you backers enough! This is amazing! I am going try lose my mind for a little while, but imagine a pile of more thank yous!
(And, yes, I managed to refresh the page during the final countdown - so I got to watch the last three glorious seconds of this!)

New Copper Road + FINAL PUSH!
First off, THE KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN FOR BOOK THREE IS ALMOST OVER. We are now counting down in HOURS - and there's a pretty giant stretch goal. Get the world involved! They need to know about this comic!
Also, new Copper Road! Calendarwise, it's a little late - but it fits with the current comics, so deal! Vote here to see it! Quincy, you are not allowed to watch Game of Thrones, but, hey, it's pop culture. You don't need to watch to know.
Speaking of comic continuity, prepare to end the school year (for reals) in style - with double-sized comics for the whole story! You're welcome. :-)

New Copper Road + FINAL WEEK!
So, yeah, SEVEN DAYS LEFT IN THE BOOK THREE KICKSTARTER! I love my book. This book is amazing! I have held a copy of it in my hand, and I probably achieved Nirvana. I could have been on a higher plane of existence - BUT I CAME BACK TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE WONDERS OF MY BOOK!
Anyway, my annual Kickstarter perk is allowing me to get custom dolls and play with them - and the only way you can stop me from having fun is to buy my silence!
But, yes, these foreign dolls - Duae Design dolls - may keep the doll theme, but they might just be a betrayal to a certain doll maker. I am a MONSTER.

Copper Roads are unlocked!
While I was off enjoying my family time - my baby brother got married! - the book three preorder hit another stretch goal! More Copper Roads! You get a new one today, and another shall come soon! (Plus more!)
As for the Kickstarter campaign, I still very much need your help - and there are more stretch goals to unlock! First of all, look at that. That is an awesome book that will enrich your life. It has lots of special stuff you can only get in book form, and you want it! Second, the stretch goals represent projects that I want to do - ones I believe others will enjoy - but these things won't happen unless I can justify them financially. There are so many stories left to tell, and it's up to your to make sure I can tell them all!

New Copper Road + Kickstarter Update!
New month, new Copper Road! Vote here to see the comic! Want more Copper Roads? Get to pledging for the book 3 Kickstarter! But more on that below - let's talk about this new comic first!
I'm a sports guy, and there's no denying the madness that comes with that turf. Everyone has some sob story, since only one team wins at the end. DC teams, at the moment, are pretty darn shameful. Recently, I've watched the National lose most of their starters to injury and go on some pretty painful slumps. When I snarked on Twitter about it, two oblivious people decided to engage me about how bad their problems were... and this comic is a sadly accurate retelling of how that went. In both cases, they had to be pitied because their team ONLY made it to the championship last year. (And this year too.) Seriously, sports people. You gotta have some perspective! Boston overloaded on so many championships in the last decade or so that no one's gonna have sympathy - even if it's fully deserved. On the other end, it doesn't matter if you like the teams or not, you don't give a Cleveland fan a hard time. Let's think about context here, and all agree that sports fans from Pennsylvania are terrible, and all the suffering in sports should be channeled to them.
Now, on to the Kickstarter update! The good news? WE'VE REACHED THE BASE FUNDING GOAL! The followup news? That was merely step one. We've now paid for printing the books, printing the current bonuses and shipping it all. That's it. I'm aiming big this year, because I need to aim big to survive - and that mean I gotta make the best bonuses I can. Everyone gets what they want, and maybe I get to keep my house!
The first bonus is above: A window cling that will go out with every physical book order! The list of stretch goals is up, and I can't wait until they start popping! And I have greater ambitious too, if we can all pull it off.
The campaign is being finessed and adapted as I go, to match up with the needs of the people. We're very close to unlocking the next wave of tier options - including Copper Roads, Cupcakes of Bliss and digital book add-ons! Updates should be coming in regularly, both with new tiers, new goals and art updates for the bonus items. Just give me the rest of Sunday off from updates. I gotta take time to make some Precocious comics. Those are important too! (Monday, though, should be fun!)

The book three preorder is LIVE!
It's been a long time coming, and it's something super-special! Book three, Party Crashers, is ready for you to make it a thing! Grab the new book, which is in BEAUTIFUL COLOR to match the comic's transition into color updates, and build your Precocious collection with lots of neat stuff!
The books cover the range of comics from #618 to #1015. Since I strive to make the book and online experiences unique, book three contains special print-only goodies - just like the other two books! (Books one and two have been revised and are being reprinted, so make sure to complete the set!) Keeping with the birthday theme, this year's bonus story covers the saga of Jacob's birthday party. You will also find a cast page and background information - yes, the book gets a cast page update while the website doesn't - and lots of tidbits about the stories with commentary introducing each story.
Artist editions are back as the Precocious highlight, and they're beautiful as ever! This year's bonuses include a new Jacob magnet (I'm hoping for bad-shirt Jacob!) and window clings! (Thank Darc of Code Name: Hunter for giving me that idea!) I shared early sketches in this comment thread, and you have a chance to guide me to the final designs as the campaign goes on.
(On that note, make sure you tie your Kickstarter account to an email you check regularly! You don't want to miss out on updates and offering as the campaign evolves. Use those accounts, friends! If you message me there, I have them right on your order profile and I can easily check to see exactly what you want!)
In addition to offering the book, I am having a big sale on Precocious comic originals! You can now hold your favorite gags, and some of Precocious' defining moments, in your hand, and display it on your wall! Here's the master list of originals available. I can add to it at your request! This is the time to grab your piece of Precocious history, as prices go back up once the campaign ends.
Printing in color is expensive. Shipping went up across the board over the past year. It takes a lot to do the bare minimum needed to make this book happen - but if we can hit that goal early, that means there's time for STRETCH GOALS! Cupcakes of Bliss are waiting for a chance to return, with new doll designs! There will be chances to unlock new goodies, or extra Copper Road comics! At the end of this funding rainbow? A SECRET PRECOCIOUS BOOK! Can you enable its creation?
I've put it all out there for you! Let's make this campaign a success! GET YOUR COPY NOW!

New Copper Road! 5/1/14
Whenever I draw a comic at night and say, "I'll post it in the morning," I'm lucky if I can remember before dinner time the next day. So 3pm isn't bad! That's only moderate failure! Please enjoy this comic. I felt like an 80's stand up comedian while writing it.
Vote here to see the new Copper Road! They haven't be coming that fast, but it's all going to be worth it. I've been devoting myself to travels, book prep - THE FILES ARE READY! PREORDERING HAPPENS SOON! - and, well, not dying.
I'm super tired right now, because I've been pushing myself really hard - but, again, it's all to ready the great stuff that's coming up! Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to nap until Sunday evening - when I really have to figure out what I'm putting on the site for Monday.

It's almost time...
UPDATE: The store's email system is broken, but orders are still processing. If you don't get a confirmation email immediately, I will write you with an update. Tech guy has been notified about the problem, so it should be fixed soon!
Now that I have a break from my three-cons-in-six-weeks marathon, it's time to take book 3 into the final stages! Aside from placing one last piece of art, and the final proofing, the book is done. It just needs your support to get it printed, and the Kickstarter campaign will be put together and launch over the next couple weeks (plus review and approval time). I suggest you start setting aside your money, because I am printing in color this time, and that means a higher goal than last year - but also the possibility of more tempting stretch goals should we hit it! I'm going to fold a sale of original comic art into this campaign, so if you've ever wanted to get your hands on one of those, this will be your best chance!
If you DON'T want to save your money for later, and you DON'T want to wait until September-ish for your fresh book-ish delivery, I've re-opened the Precocious store! You can get the final stragglers of last year's printing through the store - and they all will have an extra bonus sketch in them! The art cards and charm sets are available for online ordering too! Book orders in the store will close down once the Kickstarter campaign is ready for launch.
Well, I have more art cards available. Pictured are new additions to the art card family, as well as those I forgot to scan and put in the store before. Since I'm working on all the book stuff, I'll need you all to nudge me about them, as I will likely continue to forget to put everything online.

New Copper Road + News stuff!
Hey, I made one! Hooray! Vote here to see the latest Copper Road.
No, I didn't intentionally take Copper Roads away to force you to earn them back in the book three preorder. It's an unfortunate consequence of book work, convention prepping and me being very ill. (I'm still doing the doctor circuit, hoping for some good news.)
On the book, the preoder has been delayed again, though the release date hasn't. Basically, I'm not taking your money until the book is already complete and ready to go. There will be no iffyness on this thing. I have a basic plan for the tiers I will be offering, though I might sneak in a quickie reader survey in the next week or so to gauge interest before investing in bonus goodies. The big delay right now is not about the book being completed, but when I can put up the campaign page. If things go as planned, I'll be on the road for a large chunk of March, visiting friends and tabling at Fur The More and Furry Weekend Atlanta, so I just won't have computer time to sit down and type stuff out. It may take until early April before the campaign is proofed and approved for launch.
Also of note: Due to my two-cons-in-two-weeks journey, I will be shutting down the Precocious store during that time. I can't ship books on the road, and I'll have all remaining art cards with me at the cons for sale. This means if you want to grab some art or the books, do it now. My stock is running low, so I may keep the store closed until after Awesome Con DC.

Stream (and post-stream) results.
Thanks to all who came to Saturday's stream! Maybe I was rusty, but it was nice to do it again. I hope for a brighter, more streamy future, but it's likely this one was the last chance of the year.
Here are the results!
This piece is to serve as the cover of a binder that features my art, which is the coolest thing! It's 8.5x11" and super spiffy! Autumn is reviewing her secret (art) files before bed! With all of these, I may have overdone it on color-correcting. My screen is a bit off on yellow, so what looks right for me would be off for you. In-person, all is great.
It was a Pingo-themed night, so both Soren and Ivy got art cards. Soren's card is based off a sketch over a year old, which didn't get chosen during one of my request stream nights. It's a bit too complex to draw on the fly, so I scanned in the sketch, printed it out card-sized in blue lines, penciled over that and finally used my lightbox to get it onto an actual card.
For Ivy, she's discovering another lawsuit from a wronged magician. Since the client noted he liked Ivy's recent pink outfit, I included it for the card.
This is the long-overdue book art, which had been held until the stream. Ms. Monster tortures her kids. (The original idea did feature Ivy, so this was *almost* continuing the Pingo pride.)
Finally, here's the card drawn for the winner of the costume contest! This wasn't part of the stream, but I finished it earlier today so I could ship out both packages tomorrow. Bud is showing off both his zesty new cold weather outfit, and the setup for the (should be) winning costume!
