This was not unexpected by any means. She lasted a month longer than anyone expected - causing all sorts of scheduling nightmares (sorry, Dr. Byrd!) - so we're mostly relieved she's not in pain anymore. To her credit, she was smoking and drinking to the end.
Unless idiot bro steps in - and if he does, would he be any help there? - it's looking like I'll be heading back to DC tomorrow to take over support duties. I'll have internet, but who knows about productivity there. Strip will update as normal, and I'm hoping to keep everything else on schedule, but no promises.
Funeral is Wednesday afternoon. I plan to return on Thursday, since it is my obligation week and I have more Winchester stuff to do. (Because hospice said it would be a miracle for her to last that long...)
As for the Byrd thing... She was born Katherine Byrd (I may have spelled the first name wrong, which is embarrassing) and eventually married Malcolm Byrd - so there's a lot of Byrdies out there. You know, now that I think about it, I have absolutely NO clue about the family tree on that side of the family. That's sad.
