The points system

It takes a certain brand of crazy to attempt the daily cartooning route. The need to constantly produce - and produce work of quality - brings with it quite a bit of stress. All it takes is one bad day to throw a daily cartoonist into the downward spiral of schedule slip, and I'd been tempting that fate for a long time.

I had gotten into a bad habit. Instead of running a healthy comic buffer, I left script problems bog me down and reduce me to day-to-day cartooning. For most of the past month, it was not uncommon for me to START drawing the comic at 9pm for a 12am deadline. I can think of at least two times when I made it with less than five minutes to spare, one time my internet went out on me at 11:30pm without my comic uploaded and, of course, the times I had to put out an uncolored comic at midnight. Not only was that method of production risky, but the constant working without a net led to stress and a few rush jobs that were not fully developed.

But this is the new, productive Chrispy at work now! I'm making a conscious effort to restore myself to old glory and push even farther into awesomeness. It's time to bring order back to the chaos that my production process had become.

The problem with doing a comic start-to-finish every day is that you have to work on all comic levels at the same time, and that's usually not how artistic types work. We are moody folk. Sometimes we are full of ideas, so we should spend our time scripting and not wasting that momentum in the tedium of drawing layouts. Conversely, sometimes the brain is full of static and doing a less-creative task like lettering or inking is best to restore order. Sometimes all you want to do is draw for hours with nothing else dragging you down. Sometimes the thought of coloring a comic seems unbearable because it means moving to the computer in the bedroom and not being able to watch playoff hockey during that time. All cartoonist have that problem.

My solution of the moment is to introduce a point system. I break down the comic process into four steps: Scripting, penciling, inking and coloring. Every time I accomplish one of those steps, I give myself a point. Four points equals one successful comic made. Every additional point means the building of the buffer that is vital to this process' success!

The second I have a buffer, I have given myself the flexibility and breathing room to use the system properly. If I don't have to complete a comic that day, I can focus on whatever my strength of the moment is.

For example, Tuesday was a penciling day. I penciled four comics and did the layouts for four others. Monday the goal was coloring the three strips I had inked on Sunday. All this was set up by a massive scripting/drawing session on Saturday. On my desk right now are three inked strips ready for coloring, one strip ready for inking and four strips ready for penciling. There is a text file forever open on each of my computers to catch all script ideas I have. I have options! It's been MONTHS since I had options!

The best part about having options is having less stress. I don't stop at four points anymore. When doing a full comic a day, the final posting seemed like the end of the job. I would go off and do something else, sick of cartooning for the day. By working on what I want to work on, I keep pressing on. I did my four points of penciling today and pressed on with inking the strips because I was excited about the process.

The more points you get, the more everyone wins. I'm trying to keep this momentum as long as I can, because if I can get it fed the glory of the past shall be reclaimed. The more buffer produced with Precocious, the more side projects I can pursue, the more focus I can give to positive things like catching up on my reading and writing inane blog posts that go on forever while proclaiming the obvious as if it was something just invented!

Like I said, everyone wins.

New Years Revolutions

The unholy rebels in my soul have risen up to conquer the ruling procrastination regime of my brain. Death to the ivory tower eggheads! Up with productivity! Long live hope and change! Viva la revolucion!

Of course, such battles are long, bloody affairs with many casualties. (Sanity? First to go.) But we must fight for what is right and good! It hurts, but it's a good kind of hurt.

So now it's time for me to make some OFFICIAL resolutions for the new year. This is the day of optimism, and I intend to ride it! Here we go, with them in no particular order.

- I will keep Precocious going strong! This is intentionally open to interpretation, as changes may be in store. I want to keep going with the current format as long as I can, but I may have to scale things back slightly to fit in all these other resolutions. Don't panic yet! I'm just being cautious here. Ideally things remain as awesome as they are now.

- I will get my lazy butt into grad school. This one is major, as I've dilly-dallied far too long now. Granted, I've had my reasons, with all the chaos going on in my family. It's very hard for me to leave right now, but I've given myself over for two years now. I'm going to be in my 30's before I start school again no matter what, but 30 is way better than 31! (I'm also desperately in need of a change in venue.)

- I will find a way to start making money from my cartooning. This means designing shirts and setting up a store. I want to create a Precocious book as well, but that may have to wait until I'm in grad school. I should set up an shop, on etsy or somewhere, where I can sell prints and paintings. My birthday gift to myself should be a quality printer, which can enable me to create prints and such to sell! On the website side, I have to consider ditching Project Wonderful for a more paying ad service. I like PW because it helps other comics, but I'm not making close to what I could with my readership and pageviews. I should also start attending conventions to learn how I can one day *successfully* attend them as a vendor.

- I will do better to enhance my presence in the comic community. My horrid antisocial tendency might doom me, but I want to make myself known. This involves posting more on message boards, READING all those webcomics sites that I've been ignoring and becoming somewhat likable on twitter. I should reach out to other cartoonists and build more friendships. Once people know me, attending conventions becomes a little less intimidating!

- I will finish my Little Anxieties painting series. This can take all year, but I want it done. (Commissioned paintings do come first, after all!) If I get it done, I can start looking for galleries to display the series. (Getting into grad school might help me here!)

- I will work on improving and expanding my art skills. I want to learn how to use watercolors, so I can be like Bill Watterson! Ink and watercolor Precocious paintings make more sense than forcing acrylics to work like drawing. (Drawback: Watercolors and ink drawings do require me to mat them.) I also want to work on drawing furry. As I wrote a few days ago, I never set out to be a furry artist, but the fans sure seem to wish I was! This isn't just me giving in to pressure, it can potentially open up new illustration venues without starting from scratch and learning to draw comic humans. Human or furry, I must re-learn non-cartoony anatomy drawing. That would help me immensely, and likely make Precocious' drawing more dynamic.

- Like everyone else in history, I want to drop at least 10lbs. The stress from family crisis after crisis, combined with sedentary behavior has made me plump. I know I'm not fat, but any extra weight on my scant frame looks bad! I'd love to start exercising again, focusing on cardio, but I'll settle for better eating/living habits. When I visit the grandparents, I need to have more willpower - everything here is drenched in butter! If I have to start bringing my own snacks here, then so be it.

- I want to end this year better than how I started it. As you can see from these resolutions, many tie into each other. Getting into grad school gets me into a better environment, which enables my art skill-building and improves my health. Improved art and spirits help me find the energy to keep Precocious going AND do the extra work to get the store going and socialize. Becoming more social in the comic community gets me more readers and earns me invites to conventions, where I can make more bonds and potentially money! One good change encourages another.

So there we are. Let's check back in a year to see how I did. Heck, let's check back in two weeks, when grad school applications are due. (Good lord, I'm terrified!) My first test, of course, is probably my hardest one. Wish me luck!

So much for painting

This trip was supposed to be all about painting. Well, screw that. Let's do everything else!

My comic buffer only went until Saturday, which was fine for my initial plans of coming home, uh, tonight. Obviously, that's not happening. Instead, I'll be heading home on Sunday, which means I have to do strips here in DC. Unfortunately, DC is not the best place to make strips, so they take a bit longer to produce. Thus, painting time goes bye bye.

This was a productive evening, though! (You know it's a productive day when I have no extra sketches to show you in the daily blog.) Aside from sketching out enough strips to justify a mass inking, I also had a breakthrough with the scripting of the next storyline!

This current arc isn't getting much love, so plans to extend it have been scrapped. (I think it'll read a lot better in the archive, when you can burn through them all at once.) Baseball fun ends on the 10th, and then we launch into a special story I whipped up FOR YOU FANS! You guys reminded me that I've been neglectful about some stuff, so this is me coming back to remind you why you read Precocious in the first place.

This next story will run for four weeks, and I'm quite proud of what I have so far. 21 of the 24 scrips are done, and I know what I need to cover with the last three. Yay inspiration!

While I'm talking about the future, I'm hoping to get a bit more varied in presentation after this, going gag-a-day for a week or two between stories. I have some loose plans for the next few months, but there's lots of open space for me to drop the storytelling and go wild!

And somewhere along the line I'm doing some painting. I have commissions, darn it!

Finally, some progress!

I promised I'd draw these strips about two weeks ago. Then I got distracted! Well, as long as they're done by Monday, I'm all good. I'm cursing myself for scripting more and more complex scenes, but I hope the payoff is worth it! (Goddamn you, Quincy! You couldn't just fit in when you arrived, could you?)

I hope I can keep up this momentum and start knocking out the rest of this story at rapid pace. I need to get a big buffer if I'm going to have time to get to merchandising, web design and school stuff. I've got the scripts for another month - with an optional two-week storyline after - and I have lots of fun ideas percolating in my head.

Evolution

With my acceptance to SpiderForest, work now begins on massively upgrading the Precocious website. This is going to be a SLOG people. Thanks to Briana of the awesome Rune Master (go check it out!), I have the base for new PHP supremacy! Once it's set up, updating Precocious will be easy and AUTOMATED! That's right, drunken rich kids in white mustangs who drive into the power lines at 11:50pm, you no longer can delay my updating! Everything will be much more streamlined and efficient on the code end - but the site will look exactly the same! Win! Of course, that's once it's set up, and setup means renumbering 250 strips, copy/pasting the titles and alt text of 250 strips into and making sure every link is no longer pointing to the emeybee domain. It's gonna take a while. I love you emeybee, and it's been fun, but it's about time for me to grow up and leave the nest.

Tackling the strips is going to lead some reorganizing. Potentially starting this Sunday (depends on how fast I work) the strips will be listed by their ACTUAL number, not their 2009 number - which is going to be +100 all around. To get such a nice round upgrade, I had to play with the wretched Bonus strips that throw off the numbering. Meet the kids will now be #99, placed after the intro arcs. The first Sunday will be moved up to become the first non-intro strip, at #100. The Gary Larson toon will be stricken from the record and moved to the extras section. The final Sunday is going to be re-run on the 12th, taking that number in the archive permanently.

Wby am I doing this? Because I have to save my sanity. By moving the strips as I have, I can just add 100 to all 2009 strips. Keeping the bonus Sundays in order would mean remembering where they were placed and not overlooking them as I renumbered everything - because if I get just one off, I have to do it all again. This is WAY easier, and all it costs is one Sunday of new material. And this is just STEP ONE! I don't even know how the archives will work...

The Tiffany image is unrelated to this post. I *was* going to draw Sydney trying to capture Bud in a pokeball and make an evolution gag that way, but I snapped my mechanical pencil in two. I figured that was a sign to get my blog on and go back to inking Sunday's strip.

Kicking and Screaming

Oh, for the sake of momentum! The barely-any-sleep-in-a-week side of me just wants to lay down and play pokemon. The not-a-loser side wants to finish next week's strips. Epic battle ensues!

I *will* get some work done tonight or die trying! It's time for the dreaded tech pens to make their appearances, and such detail work is always a pain. Also, they're getting a little low on ink, so I have, like, concentrate and stuff. Booooo!

There's love in her heart (Tennis-wise, that is)

It's been hard to get the wheels turning again with Precocious. They say you have to write what you know, but right now all I know is cancer, Alzheimer's, heart disease, cancer, cancer and death. This does not a humor strip make.

The only fallback I have right now is sports. I've been watching a lot of sports. I can find humor in that! That's not too depressing! Sports can help! What's that? Every team I support is currently suffering a SOUL-CRUSHING LOSING STREAK? Fuck me. Eh, that is still the least-depressing aspect of my life. Let's roll!

Here's to the quest for momentum. I'm slugging away at the new strips and maybe they'll carry me to a funnier place. They've already forced me to make some decent sketches, as I have to figure out how to draw Suzette in action. If you could see the recent pages in my sketchbook, this is a massive improvement. C'mon, productivity, don't let me down!

This is why we have Rule #4

Instead of doing much-needed work on building up the comic buffer today, I went off on a creative tangent... FOR ADVERTISING! It's a creative exercise: How do I translate a horizontal comic into a vertical skyscraper ad? The first one was taking strip#18 and moving around so it worked vertically. It was ok, I guess, but I wanted something more dynamic. Something made to be an ad. Something dynamic. Or, barring that, something with dynamite.

I'll be coloring this sometime (maybe today, maybe not) and putting it into rotation. Hopefully it will compel people to click on the ad, despite a line of "what could go wrong?" or something like that.

In other news, MY NEW TV/MONITOR ARRIVED! Unlike my other HDTV, which I toyed with after I gave the first TV/monitor to my mother, this one is smart enough to function! I get great resolution on a big bright screen! Thank goodness I made the swatch list yesterday, because otherwise I'd be adjusting colors for this in-your-face brightness. My eyes are toast, but I seriously do not care. IT IS A WALL OF BRILLIANT AWESOME! Seriously, if this doesn't entice me to sit down and color like a mad man, then I am beyond hope. The only thing holding me back is the constant urge to do a happy dance. (Of course, I could always check my Project Wonderful stats to depress me. I got majorly spoiled by that three-day traffic spike.)

Edit: Went ahead did the coloring right away, so enjoy the final vision. (It's on the right, if you're an idiot and need that pointed out.)

A New Year's Resolution

As of posting, I have strips 38-50 sketched, lettered and ready for inking. 12 strips to go before sweet resolution! (See the wordplay? SEE IT!?) If I work my butt off today and tomorrow, I could be done by Christmas. That would give me enough time to ink, scan and upload by January 1st!

Finisingh this quixotic project will be a great relief. In my recent history, victories have been hard to come by. If I get one, the plan is to get another and another and another. It's time for some damn momentum!

Today the last Ozy and Millie strip was published. I really wanted to be up and running before it happened, as I had the delusion of picking up its legacy. All of the strips that influenced me are retired or semi-retired. Something needs to fill the void! I may be raw and rough now, but I've got great crossover potential, dammit!

It'll take a lot to get this accomplished, but maybe that last strip will be what I need. As DC Simpson dragged out finishing his comic, so did I. Now I've got to scramble to finish while the window is open. I know it sounds odd for me to hinge so much on another cartoonist, but this is a person who can shut me down before I start if there's a perceived rip-off. This is a blessing I need, both both practical reasons and because Simpson is my cartooning hero!

Anyway, I took a break from drawing because the next few strips are really hard to draw. I must purge my worry (yay, blogging) and renew my concentration. This is why people don't like artists. I give a flowery and pretentious statement when a normal person would just say, "I'm going on break."

HOLY SHIT, MAN WALKS ON FUCKNG MOON!

Brace yourselves...after a funk spanning many months, I ACTUALLY FINISHED ANOTHER FUCKING STRIP!

You may recall from a previous post that I dubbed this "the strip that broke my brain." It's DONE! Monkey = off back. Have the floodgates finally been opened?

Well, no. Tonight I got lucky with things remaining unbroken just long enough for me to get something done. I doubt I'll be able to repeat this, which any further progress at least a week away - just long enough for my brain to break again. Fuuuuck.

After getting emotional while reading the biography of Charles Schulz, I realized I was cracking up and needed to do something. Of course, after reading about the amazing impact the strip had on the world, I wanted to cartoon. But I can't cartoon, since my lighting situation is a mess. The light I moved about the drafting table is dying and has been providing inadequate light for drafting. With nothing else to do, I gave the light a shot. IT WORKED! It's been about two weeks since the thing fully lit up. The light ain't great, but it's enough! I was not going to waste this chance, so I pushed forward with the strip. Stuff started coming together and I kept at it until the thing was done.

It's still not the best strip, but it would have to be expanded to Sunday-style for the timing to work. Since I am operating on tradition syndicated comic rules, I can't go down the path. I have to compromise and, guess what, I DON'T CARE! It's done and I don't have to worry about it anymore.

I could comment more on the comic itself, but it's 2am and I'm spent.

"Hello In There" Part II: Crying not mandatory

(This is a follow up to the below post, so unless you like to Pulp Fictionalize everything, I suggest reading that post before this one.)

Would you believe that last post was an intro? I *barely* broached the point I was going to make. RAMBLING VERBOSITY IS WHY I AM SO POPULAR!

The real story here is that I'm taking action to de-rut myself and try that strange thing that people do... moving forward. I'm going to stop actively sucking! To contradict myself immediately, I will continue with this post.

Big changes have come to my schedule. I finally got permission to cut my work hours back dramatically. Sad to say, it had been suffocating me. It's not that the work was hard or overly challenge...it was just there. Always. And it was early. I worked there over two years and my body never adjusted to a 9am starting time. Every day was a miserable scramble arrive somewhat close to 9am, followed by half-awake drudgery. Around 11, my body would *actually* wake up, and I'd suddenly want to conquer the planet and do something productive. That means exercise or drawing, not translating a formatted Word document into a clumsy web page. Unattended inspiration has a way of turning on its master. When stimulation fails to come, inspiration turn into fatigue. At the end of the day, regardless of how much I actually did, I was exhausted. My energy didn't start returning until midnight, when I had to sleep. DO YOU SEE THE PROBLEM HERE?

Is that last paragraph dickishly whiny? Oh, you betcha! Hey, I knew long ago what I needed to be happy and I took efforts to set my life up so I could succeed. I know I have too much stubbornness to change and fit a normal mode. I *am* too selfish, and I'm running with it!

When I took my job, it was part of the long-term plan. I needed to raise money to support myself in grad school, I wanted to learn web design skills *and* the place was wonderfully flexible with hours! Work was great to me and I hope I did enough to make my presence worthwhile. Problem is, when I went full-time, it took up way more than an extra 20 hours a week. It became my life. I became what my 15-year-old self vowed never to become!

So now I have "free time" - a term that is a filthy liar! This is the time for me to do all the soul- and future-enriching tasks that I need to survive. I'm working less but busier than ever. Oh, and since I'm now working according to my natural sleep schedule, I'm now awesome for all my waking hours. (I remain a pathetic create when asleep.) Yeehaw!

So what was the point of all this rambling? I was bored and work (and later at home) and the blog had been neglected. ENJOY MY SOUL!

* * *

Oh, and I did locate the glorious copper hair. It is a flower among weeds, you see. If you spray a weed with herbicide, it's the flower five feet away that dies. Flowers are precious and delicate. Weed, having not been subject to eugenics, retain the hearty strength that flowers sacrificed for likability. On my face, about half a centimeter from the offending white-ish hair, is a beautiful copper hair half the size of those around it. Quality take time to grow, while garbage is available immediately. (That seriously needs to be my motto as an artist, no?)
